About the Author

Joe Navarro was a career FBI agent specializing in nonverbal communications and is now a lecturer and consultant for major companies worldwide. He has appeared on Hardball with Chris Matthews, the Today show, the CBS Early Show, CNN, Fox News, and other major media. He lives in Tampa, Florida.

Great for Spanish 2 students

This book is interesting, short in length and accessible to Spanish 2 students. Students must have a working knowledge of present, preterite, and imperfect tenses (as well as the progressive tenses) in order to understand this book. Most of the vocabulary is either very basic or cognates. The story itself is mysterious in certain parts, and the students enjoyed reading it. Many of them said that after successfully reading the book they felt they could try other Spanish texts!

The plot deals with the protagonist who is different from others in her community. She is ostracized, called a vampire, and eventually flees the town on a pirate ship. There is adventure, travel (great opportunity to teach about culture of Colombia and past civilizations), and conflict. The main message in the book is to believe in yourself and have self-worth. (The ending appeals more to the girls in the class). The only reason I did not assign 5 stars is that the ending could have offered more resolution.

Overall, great read, and will be using it again next year.

Interesting backdrop

I very much enjoyed the exotic backdrop of this novella, especially since I have been to Cartagena, Colombia. The plot is a little strange and implausible but I was able to suspend disbelief. It's easy enjoyable reading specifically for Spanish language learners, with a great glossary in the back. Out of the author's four books I would rank this one number three.

We refuse to see the threat while China presses ahead...

"The China Threat" is another in a series of books attempting to get Americans to look past their expectations for financial gain from trade with China -- to confront the reality of China's empty promises on missile proliferation, to understand their hostile intentions towards America, and to realize Beijing's utter lack of interest in democratic reform and human rights.

In the 1970s through the fall of the Berlin Wall, China and America enjoyed a marriage of convenience as they confronted the Soviet threat. Sadly, American foreign policy vis a vis China did not adjust to the end of the Cold War -- and Beijing naturally took advantage of this.

Gertz carefully chronicles how China has managed to buy or steal our most critical national security secrets. He documents how China views missile and nuclear proliferation as a way to threaten the United States (the enemy of my enemy is my friend). He sets out some sobering scenarios for Chinese aggression in Asia -- and even in our own backyard.

No one should doubt the seriousness of the China threat after reading this book. Clearly China will present as great a threat to our safety and freedom as did Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union.

Reviewer: Chuck DeVore is Vice President of Policy at the Texas Public Policy Foundation. He served in the California State Assemblyman from 2004 to 2010. how can you not be supicious

just like developers buy up surrounding land to put the squeeze on those they want out of the way, China has virtually surrounded us, sucked our manufacturing and foundries away. With a flick of the switch they can put a serious hurt on the US, and then see the gas prices soar. Certain administrations have allowed CHina to now control our economy. If you dont think so you are in serious denial. Even Dole shifted there pineapple growing to China.

About the Author

Donald Plumb was formerly Director of Pharmacy Services and Hospital Director at the University of Minnesota’s Veterinary Medical Center. Now retired from the University of Minnesota, he focuses full-time on providing veterinary drug information to veterinarians, other health professionals, and animal caretakers.

Must-Have Reference for Prescriber/Dispenser of Veterinary Medications!

As a veterinary pharmacist, I use this book several times per day -- sometimes dozens of times/day. My 7th Edition was a "handbook" size so I opted for the "desktop" version this time. I'm very impressed with the newly updated drug-monographs (and new additions) and the time spent to use citations of evidence based medicine for veterinary prescribing (FDA approved use, off-label use, dosing, mechanism, pharmacokinetics, available drug products, etc) . I also love the reference section at the end for laboratory values and other monitoring parameters a veterinarian or pharmacist may want to monitor during drug therapy. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is either prescribing and/or dispensing medications to veterinary patients of any species! This is a reference text you will not want to be without in clinical practice!!!!

Previous editions of this reference were excellent. In this edition they have changed the format of the listed uses and doses for the drugs. This new format makes it much more difficult to quickly find the information you need. Also, information for some common medications is no longer in the book. I am disappointed with this edition and I really hope the next one is better.

Digital pricing is pure gouging

I've had a copy of Plumb's on my desk, in my pocket, on my Palm Pilot or in my iPhone for over 20 years so I think I qualify as a faithful user. Nevertheless I am dismayed to find that the online subscription price has jumped in the past year from $54 to $85 annually - coincident with a new and, I think less convenient, website. Furthermore the hardcopy sells for $76 nearly $10 lower than the annual subscription fee of $85. Alas I will be searching for an alternative to Plumb's electronic subscription.

Now, this years subscription fee for return users is zero but if history is any indication the annual fee will increase next year again.
