Carl Barks was "The Good Artist" who created Uncle Scrooge and wrote and drew adventure stories of Donald Duck and a menagerie of waterfowl and other Disney comic book characters. He had the distinction of being the least known while at the same time the most popular storyteller of his day. Some authorities have reported that comic books with Carl's stories averaged 23 million copies world wide, EACH MONTH throughout his twenty-three year career. If these figures are anywhere near accurate, 23 million per month times 12 months times 23 years amounts to six billion copies sold, making Carl the most popular author in all history. The revenue generated by Carl's stories would easily have amounted to gross sales of over $600 million--an average of more than $26 million yearly--over a half century ago when a dime had meaning. Upon his retirement from comic bookery, he spent his remaining years creating oil paintings of scenes from his Disney stories, which today are purchased by collectors at enormous prices.

It was followed by other steps, in virtually every other part of our system having to do with power ---finance, politics, force --- the obligations and limits of conduct, the grounds of trust. All of them can be regarded, especially cumulatively, as important steps. All of them since (if not directly because of) this decision by what had once been a highly and deservedly respected Court, were down.
Based on a piece originally published in The New Republic, "Irreparable Harm" is a contemporaneous analysis of the historic decision in Bush v. Gore.

Waring, R.H. and W.H. Schlesinger. 1985. Forest ecosystems: Concepts and management. Academic Press, Inc., Orlando, FL. 338 p

Steven W. Running is trained as a terrestrial ecologist, receiving the B.S. (1972) and M.S. (1973) degrees from Oregon State University, and the Ph.D. (1979) degree in Forest Ecology from Colorado State University. He has been with the University of Montana, Missoula, since 1979, where he is a Professor of Ecology. His primary research interest is the development of global and regional ecosystem biogeochemical models by integration of remote sensing with climatology and terrestrial ecology. He is a Team Member for the NASA Earth Observing System, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer and is responsible for the EOS global terrestrial net primary production and evaporative index datasets. He has published over 240 scientific articles. He currently serves on the standing Committee for Earth Studies of the National Research Council, and on the federal Interagency Carbon Cycle Science Committee. He is a Co-Chair of the National Center for Atmospheric Research Community Climate System Model Land Working Group, a Member of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program Executive Committee, and the World Climate Research Program, Global Terrestrial Observing System. Dr. Running is a chapter Lead Author for the 4th Assessment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Prof. Running is an elected Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and is designated a Highly Cited Researcher by the Institute for Scientific Information.

From the persepctive of the Mission Field

Ajith Frenando's commentary immediately struck me as arising from the persepctive of one working every day in the Mission Field. He clearly understands that Acts witnesses to the power of the Spirit who equip God's people for witness and service. One can easily see that the author believes in the gifts of the Spirit and the fact that these did not disappear with the Apostolic age. Fernando's commentary has many unique features, notably the "life application" and "bridging" sections that try to connect the witness of the Book of Acts to our Christian walk in the 21st century. Missing is the original Greek along/under the English (NIV) translation. Though not a critical deficiency, it would have been useful to have the Greek nearby as a reference. Having a good study bible along side will provide additional cross references to aid in understanding the text. Having taught the Book of Acts for a number of years, and having referred to numerous other commentaries, it is refreshing to read a commentary which believes that what the early church experienced of the Spirit's power and equipping we are to also experience today. Along with all this, his scholarship shines through. A must-have in a bible teacher's library.

An Evangelist's Commentary on Acts

This commentary is a unique blend of interaction with scholarly argument and guidance for the contemporary church based on Acts. The Asian identity of Fernando highlights some aspects of the Christian life, seen in Acts, that are sometimes overlooked by Western commentators. For example, his comments on the Christian experience of suffering in his comments on the martyrdom of Stephen are challenging to the Western view. Rather than the Western approach to escape from suffering, Fernando advises embracing a Christian theology of suffering.

The number of commentaries that have academic credibility as well as a credible, powerful influence on ministry is very small. Fernando has done the church the gift of adding one more to this list.

Good insights from a "3rd world" prospective.

I was glad to see the editors chose Ajith Fernando as the author of the study of Acts. It is good to read a perspective of the Early Church from someone who is not from North America or Eurpoe. Ajith is from and ministers in Sri Lanka. His illustration concerning prejudice in the Acts, Chapter 10, was enlightening.
