About the Author

Meyya Meyyappan is the chief scientist for exploration technology at the Center for Nanotechnology, NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California. Until June 2006, he served as the director of the Center for Nanotechnology as well as a senior scientist. He is a founding member of the Interagency Working Group on Nanotechnology (IWGN) established by the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). The IWGN is responsible for putting together the National Nanotechnology Initiative. Dr. Meyyappan has authored or coauthored more than 190 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has made over 200 invited/keynote/plenary talks on subjects related to nanotechnology across the world. His research interests include carbon nanotubes and various inorganic nanowires, their growth and characterization, and application development in chemicals and biosensors, instrumentation, electronics, and optoelectronics. Dr. Meyyappan is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Electrochemical Society (ECS), the AVS, the Materials Research Society, and the California Council of Science and Technology. In addition, he is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He is the IEEE Nanotechnology Council Distinguished Lecturer on Nanotechnology, IEEE Electron Devices Society Distinguished Lecturer, and ASME’s Distinguished Lecturer on Nanotechnology (2004–2006). He served as the president of the IEEE’s Nanotechnology Council in 2006–2007. Dr. Meyappan has received numerous awards including a Presidential Meritorious Award; NASA’s Outstanding Leadership Medal; the Arthur Flemming Award given by the Arthur Flemming Foundation and the George Washington University; the 2008 IEEE Judith Resnick Award; the IEEE-USA Harry Diamond Award; and the AIChE Nanoscale Science and Engineering Forum Award for his contributions and leadership in nanotechnology. He was inducted into the Silicon Valley Engineering Council Hall of Fame in February 2009 for his sustained contributions to nanotechnology. He has received the Outstanding Recognition Award from the NASA Office of Education; the Engineer of the Year Award (2004) by the San Francisco Section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA); and the IEEE-EDS Education Award and IEEE Educational Activities Board Meritorious Award for Continuing Education for his contributions to the field of education.

Mahendra K. Sunkara is currently a professor of chemical engineering and the founding director of the Institute for Advanced Materials and Renewable Energy (IAM-RE (http://www.louisville.edu/iamre) at University of Louisville. Dr. Sunkara received his B. Tech. degree in Chemical Engineering from Andhra University (Waltair, Andhra Pradesh, India) in 1986 and M.S., Ph. D. degrees in Chemical Engineering from Clarkson University (Potsdam, New York, USA) in 1988 and Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio, USA) in 1993, respectively. He worked at Faraday Technology, Inc. in Dayton, Ohio from 1993 to 1996 as a project engineer and served as the technical leader/principal investigator on several SBIR research grants dealing with electrochemical technologies for environmental remediation and corrosion sensing and mitigation. Since joining University of Louisville in 1996 as an assistant professor, he received external research contracts in excess of $10 million to support a research program and to establish an Institute for Advanced Materials and Renewable Energy at the school. His research interests and projects include renewable energy technologies such as solar cells, Li Ion batteries, production of hydrogen from water and process development for growing large crystals of diamond, gallium nitride and bulk quantities of nanowires, processes for a set of novel carbon morphologies discovered within his group. He has published over 100 articles in refereed journals and proceedings, four book chapters and was awarded seven U.S. patents along with several additional U.S. patent applications pending. Several national and international news articles appeared on his research work in the area of nanoscale materials and their applications in to Li Ion batteries and sensors, etc. In the last seven years, Dr. Sunkara delivered more than 40 invited and keynote lectures in Germany, the U.S., Taiwan, Slovenia and India. Three of his research articles appeared on the covers of prestigious journals, Advanced Materials and Advanced Functional Materials. He is the founding organizer of an annual statewide workshop on the theme of Materials Nanotechnology (KYNANOMAT) held since 2002. He was awarded the Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty in Engineering award in 1999 and was the first recipient of the prestigious CAREER grant in Speed School from the National Science Foundation in 1999. In 2002, the Louisville Magazine placed him in the list of top 25 young guns in the city of Louisville. In 2009, he received the 2009 University of Louisville’s President’s distinguished faculty award for research.

great, but some shipping problemns

Book is good, very clear explanation/review of nanowires, good for someone with some knowledge of chemistry, but you don't have to know anything about nanowires. Shipped on time, but some of the corners of the book were bent when received.

Phenomenal!

I purchased this book on a whim and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of its content. Lea takes readers step by step through simple and very complex design techniques. His instructions are easy to follow and, unlike many other Photoshop books I have picked up, just as easy to apply to other projects!

Having access to the author through the reader forum on the book website makes this an even more useful tool. Any tips that might seem vague are easily explained by the man who wrote the book - and other readers that have overcome similar problems. I have worked through several books on Photoshop, but this has been the best by far!

Filled with Creative Techniques

This is a great book for those who are familiar with the basic tools of Photoshop, but who would like more practical advice on how to use them. A lot of the Photoshop books on the market just rehash things that can already be found in the users manual. This book, instead of wasting time telling you what a brush is, jumps straight into showing you how to use the tools at your disposal to achieve the effects that you want.

What I found particularly useful about this book is that nearly half of it covers illustration and art techniques rather than just photo manipulation. Among the skills that you can learn in this book are:

*how to create Painter-like effects in Photoshop
*how to illustrate characters using shape layers
*how to create realistic looking graffiti art and stencils
*how to transform a photo into an illustration
*how to transform a sketch into an illustration
*how to create retro-style art as in 50's advertising posters
*coloring comic art using Photoshop

In addition to these skills, this book teaches a lot of mixed media type of techniques. For example, you can learn how to use the photocopier or fax machine to achieve a certain effect in your art. Also, how to use scanned textures to add a sense of realism to your digital art.

I really recommend this to those who are looking to use Photoshop for graphic design, illustration, or comic work. You'll learn a lot of techniques that will make your art shine.

I have never met a Photoshop book that has enraptured me like this one. This guy is fantastic, he brings a new look to the power of Photoshop. I don't know a Photoshop user who won't be challenged and inspired by this book. It encompasses everything from collage and montage to painting and vector drawing and in a very accessible way. It's a winner it should get 6/5 stars.

It is written so that even a relatively new dollhouse builder can use the techniques and hints included. It covers all aspects of the finishing touches needed to take your dollhouse from the basic wooden frame to a nicely finished treasure.

Well laid out, modern, clear, lots of nice photos

I have this book out of the local library and highly recommend it. I am not a dolls' house/miniaturist, but I have larger scale fashion dolls and the like, and was looking for ideas of what to make for them.

I like that the layout of this book is so clear and open. There is a lot of white space, which makes the text easier to read. If one had one's own copy, it also means that there is room for notes such as where one might purchase some of the materials, or costs, or the like. I especially liked the sections about making kitchens, stairways, and roofing. Very highly recommended especially to the beginner who may be intimidated by the incredible detail and diversity of this hobby.

This book is a great resource book. It is loaded with tips that can save you time and costly mistakes. The information contained in this book is adaptable to kit houses and from scratch. Well written and set up. I would highly reccommend.

HORRIBLE! For "entertainment" purposes only

A lot of the dream object entries don't sound like they fit what they predict/interpret in real life.
For instance, to dream of Frustration or wake up frustrated means "the coming of events that will be very pleasing and easy to accept." Uh, Riiiiiiiiight.

It also contradicts on entries of crying babies. On one it actually says to hear babies crying predicts good news.

And this entry is the most laughable of all--Diarrhea:"Dreams of having or seeing diarrhea foretell excellent fortune and good luck. HA! And contradicting listing under "Dysentery"--illness, disappointment which fits.

A bunch more laughable entries. Sound made up by the authors. Some entries useful, but I'd stick to online dreammoods dictionary or a book more credible than this.

About the Author
Saihong Li was born in 1972, in Tieling, north-eastern China. She studied English for the BA at Liaoning Normal University; her MA in Applied Linguistics is from Dalian Maritime University. She was a lecturer at both of these universities, in English and Linguistics, and in 2001 was a visiting researcher at Beijing Foreign Studies University. In 2002 Saihong was awarded a scholarship to pursue further research in translation studies, lexicography and language pedagogies at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Since then she has been a teacher of Chinese and Linguistics at the University of Copenhagen, the University of Southern Denmark and the Copenhagen Business School. In 2006 she was awarded a stipend for doctoral research and in 2009 was awarded the PhD by the Department of English, Germanic and Romance Studies at the University of Copenhagen. Her dissertation on lexicography and language learning forms the substance of the present publication. In 2010 Saihong moved to the UK to take up a position as Lecturer in Applied Linguistics and Chinese at the University of Salford. Her experiences have straddled diverse cultures, languages and disciplines; her theoretical reflections are informed by many perspectives, all of which contribute to her practice as a teacher.

Beautiful Otherness : Definition is as SHIFT,FAIL, FOLLOW

I wasn't planning on writing a review of this text but am so irritated by the previous reviewers "review" I find it necessary to provide some sort of information about this serious collection of work.

First of all Craig Owens was an outsider with a job a GENIUS. That means his insight is an art form, unique and idiosyncratic. He is not a Philosopher but a cultural critic with insights profound enough to cross disciplines. Yet because he reviewed art and so few are educated in art many curious minds are never introduced to his work. This does not mean the Aesthetic of Otherness as presented by Owens is discipline specific, nor does it mean Owens is not accessible. To understand Owens one must consider the work he references and its time period.

Perhaps one of the most important essays in this delightful book is The Discourse of Others. This is assigned reading for most art students and cultural studies folks. The text explores the relationship between post-modernism and Lacanian polarity. This is a contradiction since to be a Lacanian one believes in the triad of symbolic order. This is the point, otherness is not responsive. He starts the essay with a heavy use of Frankfurt School Key words reminding the reader of allegory, of antagony of protagony... he reminds us of the economic history of culture. He continues on to present the dichotomy of disassociation and power as a matter of continual cultural unrest. Perhaps this is similar to an old friend reminding us that life has never been pretty, noting this is its glory. This visualization is accomplished with reference to the writing of Strauss and Derrida, Later he brings in the thesis ie the meaning of Otherness with a direct note by Paul Ricoeur a French Anarchist and humanist. Throughout the essay he discusses the rejection of reality, of propaganda and the reception of what we now call "new media" with reference to the media's creators. This is what makes Owens profound. He is discussing the creator in an ever evolving age of virtual and using scholars like Baudrillard to sell his case. Brilliant!

In another essay Improper Names, Owens explores the relationship between cosmopolitan and local rhetorical conventions. He starts by exploring site specific conceptual art and anthropological works which incorporate the history, tradition and use of names. He discusses the insult of tourism, of accessibility , of simplification but celebrates the investigation. It becomes clear Ownes is concerned with a unique brand of isolated mass consumption, of the Branding of Otherness. Even making refernce to the work of Josef Beyus, whose personal friend once told me his work is the exploration of good people doing bad things. Making this point ever so bitter sweet. At the very least one could note some comparison to Foucault's concerns with Maddness, that as society we are obsessed with being normal, defining ourselves by the perception of illness.

Overall Owens is a committed critic who's compelling work made note of current happenings in the cultural sector during the 1980's. He was a defining and innovating force participating in elite conventional communities while simultaneously challenging every aspect of its institutional nature. When reading Owens there is never a question of one's inclusion in the investigation as his writing is a labor passion.

Practical, informative, helpful

Have not read the entire book, but found and perused excellent selected preview content (significant sections, on another website). Expect to order this book soon.

I am not a physician, clinician, nor mental health professional.

However, due to dire circumstances, I needed good sound practical information about the illness, precipitating factors, metabolic issues, differential diagnosis, neurological and neurochemical aspects.

Found more here than I expected.

It gave me perspective, understanding, and more hope; there is a history of the syndrome in medicine and psychiatry, clinical tables of causes, tests, and treatments, case histories.

While a complex medical condition that is not well understood, there are good treatment options.

Catatonia is underappreciated

The book is well written, with many case histories scattered throughout to round off the theoretical parts. Comprehensive enough not to miss out on major points yet not too broad-stroked to get lost in theory. Should be very useful for clinical practice. Max Fink delivered a small masterpiece with this one by pairing up-to-date science with rather classical, european-inspired clinical writing.

DSM criteria do not provide good diagnostic guidelines for catatonia and thus, perhaps, we are missing out on too many cases. A must read for the mental health professional.

Essential reading for pesychiatrists and neurologists
