About the Author
Will Holman was educated as an architect at Virginia Tech and Auburn University’s Rural Studio. He has worked as a designer, craftsman, carpenter, educator, and author. Since 2008, Holman has published 54 furniture construction how-to articles on Instructables.com. His work has also been published in the book PlyDesign, in Readymade and Make magazines, Design Observer, and on several prominent sustainable design websites. He lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland, where he is currently planning a makerspace for a non-profit development company.

A Detailed Project-Based Guide to Making Repurposed Furniture

As someone who regularly reads project-based furniture building books, and as someone who's been building furniture from found and repurposed objects for about 15 years, I was excited to come across this book. It's really kind of a hybrid: part manual to furniture construction, and part project-based. Project-based books are pretty common in this area, and they tend to focus on how to make simple pieces of furniture: a lamp, table, chair, etc. The thing is that most furniture books that focus on found materials keep things very simple. So in many of those books you'll see how to make a coffee table from a pallet, or a bookshelf from some found wood.
What's different about this book is that the projects really get into some woodworking. With that said, this is not about working in a shop with filtered air and ubiquitous power tools; it's about keeping this simple and getting some sawdust in your goatee. Many somewhat complicated chairs are featured in this book, for instance, and the author shows you how to make tables, an array of lamps, and so on. The aesthetic of the furniture is certainly somewhat distressed, but the designs all gesture toward modern furniture -- so there are some clean lines and appreciation of minimalism.
As you'll see on the cover and in many of my pictures, this is furniture that you could imagine having in your 2,000 square foot SoHo studio. It's furniture made from repurposed road signs, lit with bunches of jars recomposed into a lamp, and so on.
Now, with all that said, I do have a few small problems with this book that are worth mentioning. I certainly like the book overall, but these small things stood out to me. First of all, some of the designs seem quite flawed to me. One chair, for instance, is reinforced with very gaudy metal brackets. Better joint work and triangular bracing would have been more elegant and less Frankenstein-ian, I think. Furthermore, to call this furniture style "guerilla" is a bit of a stretch, I think. Guerilla art is about challenging the socio-political status quo, and I see what is advocated for in this book as pretty mainstream at this point. Sure using old materials is better than buying them at Home Depot, from an eco-perspective, but I don't see this book as all that radical overall.
So with those small points made, I'll end by saying that there are many, many great ideas in this book. If you're wanting to move from beginner to intermediate woodworker and also interested in using old and repurposed materials, this is certainly the book for you!

A Fascinating Book That Brings a New Eye and Skills for Salvaging Materials to Enjoy in Our Homes

The author is a young man of vision and precision, and this fascinating book shows that he's creative and talented in bringing new use to ordinary items that we may not give a second thought to repurposing. You can almost feel the joy that Will has experienced in visualizing what he can do with "salvaged materials" and then bringing them to a new identity of usefulness and enjoyment. No doubt he's had some fun in his searches for the materials he had in mind.
This is a top-quality book with incredible photography and amazingly detailed instructions, with precise drawings and measurements of each part in the process. Maybe he should work for IKEA so we could put their stuff together more easily!! He also instructs readers that you don't have to have a boatload of tools in your "workshop," whatever and wherever that may be.
Applause for this great publication that should get your creative juices flowing! My own talents lie in creative sewing projects for window treatments and decor, but Will can lead you to so much more -- with some fun along the way. No matter the size of your wallet or your living space, you'll find some great ideas and instructions to furnish them.
Definitely a 5 Star book.

Reinventing The Mantra of "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle"

We just received our copy of this book and I must say I am very impressed with the concept and execution of the various pieces (art, really) that Will Holman has created in this book. We are fortunate to own a few of his earlier works and, without fail, these pieces quickly become a topic of conversation when we have visitors. Each and every piece is durable and has a story to tell.
Quite possibly the best part of this book is the way in which Will has boiled down the rather complex themes of design and style for people on a budget. He makes really cool pieces for those of us that want an alternative to the potentially scripted stylings of the big box stores. Buried in this is a strong environmental ethic that seeks to reduce waste and repurpose resources in a functional way.
