Still questioning Spirituality or confused as to how to explain it?

This is an Excellent book for the Novice, Aleyo, Spiritualist, self proclaimed experts and so on. Why? Because it is simply a collection of Historical Truth and extremely effective songs and prayers. Sancista Brujo Luis has painstakingly taken the time to elaborate the Discernible truth regarding the Spirit world. If you have a lover, family member, friend or colleague who questions your Spirituality and you are not quite sure on how to explain it, this Book is your answer. If after reading one does not understand then it is reasonable to think they are almost a lost cause. The Information provided is not dogmatic nor engrossed in a dictatorship style of leadership. This is simply the Honest and simplest truth to begin and also continue the practice of Spiritism. Please Understand that this book is merely an introduction with full explanation not an end all to Spiritual wisdom and understanding. This book is not a step by step guide on how to conduct a misa or become a medium. It is a guide to Understand what it is to conduct a misa, become a medium and so on. faith hope and charity

Clarified many issues, nice that the 1/3 of the book is prayers but would prefer he included it in english. Many spelling errors could use a better editor. Hope the author will continue to write and share to help preserve the tradition of espiritismo and sanse. Not really a handbook for developing mediums skills more about the spiritist cultural philosophy and religious practice.

A Spectators Review

As a client of Sancista Brujo Luis and a follower on his Facebook page, I was intrigued to learn he had wrote "Luz y Progresso,"� a manuel for developing mediums. Although I am not a medium, or initiate of Espiritismo Criollo or Sanse, I have studied world religions, specifically in the Caribbean. For that reason,� I decided to purchase the book, to understand the basic construct of Espiritismo Criollo and how spectators such as myself can understand the basic premise of the religion.�

Luz y Progresso starts with an explanation of Allen Kardec and his role in Espiritismo criollo. Sancista Luis,� explains Kardec's role in the religion and how his doctrine was initiated, while at the same time explains how it applies in present day misas. As a person who has attended Spiritual Feast Day Misas, Coronaciones, and Levantamiento de Causas, I found this intriguing. For starters, I am better able to understand why Kardec's literary work is used at the beginning of each misa, regardless of the type of gathering. I always wondered why a European man's literary work was used in spiritual gatherings of indigenous a Taino and African belief system. Sancista explains the premise, regardless of the belief system the prayers are utilized to protect the mediums and guests from unwanted negative spirits, while only allowing spirits of the mediums own court and spirits of light, to participate in the gathering. I found this aspect intresting because it set a structure to the belief system, unifying the circle of mediums in a common goal that only spirits of light and elevated spritits, will participate in this ceremony. As a spectator in the misas, I observed that once the ceremony had commenced no spirits were allowed to mount until the prayers were finished. If a spirit tried to come through in a medium while the prayers were taking place,� the spirit was sometimes scolded, since the spirit should no better than to come through when the spiritual gathering was trying to cleanse the area of unwanted negative spirits, which the author describes as "causas" or "espritos atrasados" in his book.

In sum, I found the book facinating. It helped me, a person whom is not initiated in Espiritismo Criollo,� understand the basic premise of the brief system and the important symbology used as a vehicle to communicate with the spirit realm, from the use of water, which Sancista describes as the b�veda to the use of tarot cards, while also using a medium as a "caballo", allowing the spirit to use his/her body to provide messages. I've had the� opportunity to witness all these things as a client and when participating in misas. The book gave me a better understanding of the process,� since I'm most circumstances I was just interested in hearing the messages from the spirits were delivering to the participants. I highly recommend this book to developing mediums,� as well as those studying anthropology, world religions, and for those like myself, occasionally assisting� misas as a spectator.

Glad I have this book in my collection!!!

I have a few adult coloring books now and this is the best by far. The book has blank pages after every illustration which is incredibly helpful so when I color, I don’t have to worry about getting my next illustration messed up. All other coloring books I own, have single sided illustrations, but the next new page contains the next image and if I use a marker, the marker will go right through to the next page. Most of the pictures are pretty funny in the book and very detailed and fun to color with. Glad I have this book in my collection!!!

Love it! Great variety, creative not corn ball, illustrations will make you laugh out loud. Heavy weight paper with a thoughtful bonus feature of placing a blank page behind each of the coloring pages ensuring your ink or scribble lines stay just on the intended page.
Out of the 4 books I purchased this one is in a class of its own as far as creativity, humor, great illustrations, paper quality, variety, number of pages to color.
I'm really glad I purchased this book and will be purchasing additional ones as gifts for family and friends.

Harvey, a freelance journalist and children's book author, has organized the recollections of several very lively, articulate women into an exploration of sex, courtship, out-of-wedlock pregnancy, motherhood, "pocket-money" work, careers and lesbianism during the '50s. The evocative and illuminating material will jog many memories, tickle a few funny bones--remember "technical virgins"?--and perhaps even prompt a tear or two. There are wonderful descriptions of the training of a stewardess (over the hill at 35) and the fury of a New York City radical, kept at home by her husband after their baby was born. Harvey also, intriguingly, shows some women choosing marriage so they would not have to deal with the new possibilities that--albeit in a limited fashion--were beginning to open up for them.

Freelance journalist Harvey (The Village Voice, etc.) half- successfully orchestrates a number of women's ``coming of age'' memories of the 50's, highlighting the restrictions and penalties these mostly middle-class, bright, urban, East Coast women endured. Drawing on interviews with 92 women aged 58-68, Harvey reconstructs the sexual values that shaped women's lives--the bizarre contradiction between their seductive appearance (red lipstick, pointy bras) and the repressive morality that made marriage the condition for sex, and the bearing of children and living in isolating, child-oriented suburban developments the norm. She discusses the brutality of childbirth dominated by male physicians; the naivet‚ of young mothers (one was advised to nurse while listening to Beethoven and smoking a cigarette); birth control; and the priority placed on ``perfect'' children through whom mothers acquired their value. Lamenting that no man ever had to choose between having a family and a career, she examines the working lives of those who successfully entered male-dominated professions; those who cultivated low-level jobs ``to fall back on''; the experience of lesbians (especially the freedom they enjoyed in the military); the deterrent effect of the civil-rights movement and anti-Communist activities on women's liberation; and the displacement of women in radical politics. With the election of JFK in 1960, the introduction of the Pill, and the Redbook survey examining ``Why Young Mothers Feel Trapped''--to which 24,000 women replied--the women's movement, Harvey points out, gained direction: Women like those interviewed by Harvey went to school and to work, divorced their husbands, and protested against the war in Vietnam. Not to be missed

This book should be required reading for every woman and teenage girl in America, many of whom take for granted the struggles our foremothers went through and how hard it was to be a woman not so long ago. Many of the stories in this book are heartbreaking, and very memorable. Even though many people like to portray the Fifties as a golden paradise, an age of innocence, when nothing was the least little bit amiss, books like this paint a radically different picture. The Fifties were just as tumultuous as any other decade, but people back then were better at covering up and repressing taboo behaviours, like premarital sex and lesbianism. Reading this book made me very glad I was not alive in the Fifties.

The women interviewed for this book spoke about many different subjects which most women of the decade had to deal with, often in isolation because they had no one to talk to or because they had been taught not to speak up and be "unladylike" by disturbing the status quo and rocking the boat. Among these subjects include radical politics, military wives, life in Levittowns, the sexual double standard of the era (girls who went all the way were punished for enjoying sex or getting pregnant, while the boys didn't even get so much as a slap on the wrist), what it was like for unwed mothers (the story about Doris, who got pregnant for the first time as the result of a rape, was particularly heartbreaking), how know-it-all male physicians treated their patients like stupid children and totally took over their birth experiences, making it more about the doctor being a god over womens' bodies than the woman going through one of the most powerful experiences possible, what it was like in the days before the Pill, when premarital chastity was accomplished more through fear than personal beliefs and when "technical virgins" abounded just as much as they do today, lesbian women, divorce, higher education (many women were urged to drop out of college if they had academic difficulties, or were bullied out of fields of study dominating by men, such as business and architecture), and what women experiencing crisis pregnancies had to go through in the days of back alley abortions. This was also the era when impressionable young women were taught that their highest aspiration should be to be a wife, mother, and homemaker, with the only respectable professions open to women being that of nurse, teacher, and secretary. Married women who wanted to work were seen as odd, and many people would not hire married women. Married women who had no children were thought to be insane, and if they didn't have "enough" children, they were looked on just as suspiciously. This was not a great decade in which to be a nonconformist. After reading a book like this, it would be hard for anyone to not realise why there were so many radical sweeping changes in the Sixties and Seventies. These women who had come of age in the Fifties had been through enough and weren't going to take being treated like second-class citizens and living under a sexual double standard anymore.

This is difficult stuff to read at times, knowing what life was like for women not that long ago, but it should also be inspiring, realising how far we've come in so many ways. It should be a real eye-opener for anyone, male or female, who refuses to believe that things were really this bad back in the Fifties.

Everyone should read this book of testimonials from real women who started dating or became wives in the 1950's. It really sheds some light and will challenge preconceived notions of the time.
Wonderfully written. You will breeze through it and feel fulfilled.

Very enjoyable read

I very much enjoyed reading this book. The author starts each chapter with a little historical information about the topic she is discussing (e.g. abortion, suburban life, homosexuality), and then she lets the women she interviewed take over the story. This book could be a fast or slow read, depending on if you are taking notes or just reading for pleasure, for example, but either way, the women's voices stick with you. I still think about the women's stories long after I have read the book! I would recommend this book to people who want to learn more about women's lives in the 1950s, but specifically to people who want a history book that is accessible and full of interesting stories and anecdotes about women by women.

About the Author
Cecil Scott "C.S." Forester was the pen name of Cecil Louis Troughton Smith (27 August 1899 - 2 April 1966), an English novelist who rose to fame with tales of naval warfare. His most notable works were the 12-book Horatio Hornblower series, depicting a Royal Navy officer during the Napoleonic era, and "The African Queen" (1935; filmed in 1951 by John Huston). His novels "A Ship of the Line" and "Flying Colours" were jointly awarded the 1938 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction.

Start with this one.

If you're new to the Hornblower series, start with this one. Then read Ship of the Line, then Flying Colors. The three are practically a triptych, whereas the others all feel like they have space between them. Also, since Forester actually wrote Beat To Quarters first, there's in 'introductory' quality to it that no other book in the series has. The series compares favorably with the Aubrey/Maturin series I think. Odd that they were both cut short by the deaths of their respective authors.
In short, start with this and the next two as a trilogy, then proceed in any order you want.

I ignored an actual battle to read this...

...or, to be more precise, I sat within yards of a major Civil War re-enactment so engrossed in this book that I managed to ignore artillery and musket fire. I am a big fan of the Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian, but previously looked down my nose at Hornblower, I think because I knew it solely from TV and movies. This book never slows down for a minute--not just battles but ship repair and revictualling seem gripping in the hands of Forester.
Based on the films, I was not expecting Hornblower to show much internal life--he always seems to be superhuman on screen, but in the book he must struggle with his softer nature to develop his imperious style. Likewise I expected nothing interesting in the way of female characters, but it was a happy surprise to find Lady Barbara Wellesley on board ship.
If you will forgive a few O'Brian/Forrester comparisons: O'Brian is funnier. Forrester's battle scenes are a bit easier for me to follow. Hornblower is a more interesting or at least complex character than Aubrey, but O'Brian has the advantage of Maturin, who not only adds character but allows for dialogue rather than the perennial internal monologues Hornblower has with himself because he has no one of rank to talk to.
I hope that more seasoned readers of the series will agree with this appeal to newer readers: Even if you have read neither author, this book is a good place to start.

In my opinion the best Hornblower book written.

I first read BEAT TO QUARTERS when I borrowed it from a public library in 1940. It is now 1998 and the third copy of the book is in my book case, the other two copies, being paper-backs, having been read until worn out.
I might add that, in my opinion, any aspiring writer would do well to read Forester, not to copy his style, but to realise that any good author can entertain, but only the great can enthrall; and only the greatest can make you "see" a character (even a minor one) in only two short lines of print.
His death robbed the reading world of one of its most readable authors.

Fun dictionary

What a fun dictionary. I enjoy just looking at the photos and seeing many words that relate to one topic. For example, if you want to know what various parts of a car are called, it's quite easy to see most of them on a few pages. Also, like the pictures of food with their names. I even recommended it to a French friend to help her with her English. It won't replace your regular dictionary, but it's a useful addition.

Great Learning Support... and a pretty good bathroom book.

Awesome, fun to look at, discrete learning moments whenever you want, great clarity, the fact that it's photos is very helpful. Just genius support to learning without feeling like you're forcing yourself. They should make a series of posters you can hang on the wall until you learn each set of terms.

About the Author
Capt. Keith Cunningham (Retd.) has more than 25 years' experience with the Canadian Forces and the US Army. He has considerable practical experience, including a combat tour in Vietnam, peacekeeping and countersniper operations in Cyprus, and annual unit-and command-level military exercise in North America and Europe. He has taught marksmanship courses at the Canadian Forces Infantry School and at several police forces in Ontario. An internationally certified shooting coach, he has successfully coached numerous teams to national and international excellence.

Linda Miller has considerable experience in international small-bore target shooting as a member of Canada's Shooting Team. She won medals at the 1993 Mexico World Cup, the 1994 Commonwealth Games and the 1995 Cuba World Cup. In 199, Linda became the first woman to win the Ontario Lieutenant Governor's Medal for full-bore shooting.

Bible for Wind Reading

If you have one book for wind reading, this should be it. Whether your a novice or experienced wind shooter this book has something for you. It covers how to get wind speed and direction from flags, mirage, and natural phenomenon. The book also details methods for recording shots and improving your shooting and thus your wind reading skills. If your not a consistent shooter, you'll never know if the wind caused your bullet to move or if you did.

I don't understand the negative reviews for this book, whatever you shoot, if you want to be accurate you have to read the wind. Fact, can't argue with that. This book tells you how to read the wind. It does not give ballistics data for hundreds of different rounds or tell you what to do with your rim fire. That is not the purpose of the book, the purpose of the book is to instruct you in how to determine wind speed and direction which it does extremely well. There are all kinds of free ballistics programs out there for your specific round.

This book also outlines various strategies for dealing with wind in competition. I am not a competition shooter, but I still found the information interesting.

The reviewer who said this book is worthless must have something against the authors or Canadians in general. The methods used in this book are also the same methods used in numerous magazine articles and sniper manuals that I have read, from the Army's to the Marines to various civilian books. This book simply puts everything together in a more comprehensive and easier to understand fashion.

In my opinion this is the best book for learning to read wind speed and direction.

The Only Book Like It.

The Wind Book for Rifle Shooters is an excellent resource. As far as I know this is the only book of its type. It's very well written in a way that's easy to understand for such a complex subject. The charts and graphs are extremely helpful. It's a bit on the short side at about 125 pages but still packed with knowledge. The information contained within this book are not just opinions but tried and true facts. Much of the same information in this text is taught in various sniper training courses that I have attended. This book can make life much simpler for snipers or long distance competition shooters. The wind can be your worst enemy if you don't understand its effect on a bullet in travel. You need this book.

Excellent --- Basic and Not-So-Basic Information

First, let me say that I have been shooting for a long time. Retired military and civilian competitive rifle shooter. But don't get me wrong, I am not saying that I know a better way. Because I don't...!! What I AM saying is that Linda Miller and Keith Cunningham got it right.

I have just recently started shooting tactical precision. It is a new discipline for me and I realized that I needed some help ... especially with wind. I started researching and through a lot of reading and a lot of luck I found this book. Actually, I started with internet searches and found several articles and books that referenced this book. Because it appeared to be universally accepted, I decided to purchase it ... along with some others. I am sure happy that I did.!! This book is very well done. It is complete... at least as complete as is possible to be with a subject like WIND.! I have read most of the reviews on this book and will only say this..... No, this book is not about shooting "across the course". No, this book is not about "service rifle". No, this book is not about .22 rimfire. No, this book is not about air rifle at short distances. This book is about WIND... And the techniques that can be used to alleviate some of the mental strain or anguish associated with WIND when you are shooting a rifle in WIND. All of these techniques are useful for all shooters in all disciplines. After all, wind is wind. It affects projectiles as they move toward their intended target, and to a lesser degree (maybe..?) it also affects the shooter because of the action of the wind against the shooter's body. Now, granted, the material is presented (mostly..generally..??) from the stance of a "high-power" shooter at various distances. A lot of the anecdotal information is from "Palma" and "Bisley" style shooting where the authors have participated (as might be reasonably expected..). But the truth is .... all of this information can be useful, can be made to conform to your discipline with a little thought and extrapolation.

I found the information to be comprehensive and very well thought through and presented. When speaking of wind flags, it is not so much about "use wind flags", but more about "HOW to use wind flags". And, WHY using two flags in two very distinct positions is so important. Not just any two flags, but two VERY SPECIFIC wind flags. When speaking of wind direction, it is not only about "wind value", but also about why a "fishtailing" wind that only varies twenty or thirty degrees can throw you WAY off your target. Normally twenty or thirty degrees of change will only cause a slight sight change (depending on wind strength..). But in two very distinct conditions that same fishtailing wind can wreak havoc.!! Linda Miller and Keith Cunningham know this..... And they impart that knowledge to the reader.

This book is filled with such pearls of wisdom. It is complete with charts and explanations and solutions. Each chapter is documented with End Notes that give the reader additional references to material within that chapter. I have now read through this book twice, and will undoubtedly read it again. It is that good.

I will recommend this book as the best treatment on this particular subject that I have been able to locate. It is a bit technical in spots, but the science behind the material requires it to be that way. If you want a good, precise background on WIND, this is one of the best books available. OTOH, if you don't like to read or you want someone to just tell you what to do, then this book may not be for you. It will require you to read and understand. But really, that's all... The information is there. It is up to you what you do with it.....

Philip C. Kolin is the University Distinguished Professor in the Department of English at the University of Southern Mississippi, where for 40 years he has taught courses in composition, business and technical writing, literature, and research methods. He received the Conference of Learned Journals award for the best new journal. In addition, he was also named Southern Mississippi's first Distinguished Professor in the Humanities. Dr. Kolin has published almost 40 books and 200 scholarly articles covering a variety of subjects, including writing, drama, linguistics, and popular culture. He also has written an award-winning book on professional writing for nurses and articles on writing for lawyers and other professionals. Over the years, he has conducted workshops on technical business writing, the publication process, and managing professional communications. He received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University.

About the Author
Susan Singer is the Laurence McKinley Gould Professor of the Natural Sciences in teh dpartment of biology at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, where she has taught introductory biology, plant biology, genetics, plant development, and developmental genetics for 20 years. Her research interests are focused on the development and evolution of flowering plants. Singer has authored numberous scientific publications on plant development, contributed chapters to developmental biology texts, and is actively involved with teh education efforts of several professional societies. She received the American Society of Plant Biology's Excellence in Teaching Award, serves on teh National Academies Board on Science Education, and chaired the NRC study committee that produced America's Lab Report.

Jonathan Losos is a Monique and Philip Lehner Professor for the Study of Latin America in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and Curator of Herpetology at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University. Losos's research has focused on studying patterns of adaptive ratiation and evolutionary diversification in lizards. The recipient of several awards including hte prestigious Theodosius Dobzhansky and David Starr Jordan Prizes for outstanding young evolutionary biologists, Losos has published more than 100 scientific articles.

Kenneth A. Mason received his undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology from the University of Washington, worked at UC Berkeley, then pursued his PhD in Genetics at UC Davis. He has taught Gentics, Microbial Genetics, Microbiology, Advanced Molecular Genetics, Introductory Biology, and a Genetics Laboratory that he designed.

George B. Johnson, Ph.D., is a professor of biology at Washington University in St. Louis and a professor of genetics at the university's School of Medicine. He is a prolific author of life science texts and curriculum products in a variety of media. New to his list of works are the Explorations of Human Biology CD-ROM and the textbook Human Biology, both offered by Wm. C. Brown Publishers. Johnson is acknowledged as an authority on population genetics and evolution variability, and he has published more than 50 research papers dealing with these and related topics. Visitors to the St. Louis Zoo can appreciate Johnson's work in the Living World, the educational center of which he is the founding director.

Peter H. Raven, Ph.D., is director of the Missouri Botanical Garden and Engelmann professor of botany at Washington University at St. Louis. He oversees the garden's internationally recognized research program in tropical botany--one of the world's most active in the study and conservation of imperiled tropical habitats. Raven's botanical research and work in the area of tropical conservation have earned him numerous honors and awards, including a MacArthur Fellowship. He has written 17 textbooks and more than 400 articles, and he is a member of th National Academy of Science and the National Research Council.

Seriously...my Mom and Dad could benefit from this book. The birds and bees don't do a dang thing they told me about. Very informative...not enough pictures of kittens and bunnies. I've come to expect more frankly.
