Lisa Ann: A Ray of "Sunshine"...

Well done, young lady! This was a decent coverage of her (occasionally) indecent life told in an informative manner rather than having to rely on tittilation to entertain. Over the years she has done so much that the only real complaint anyone could make would be her omission of occasional activities or accomplishments. I was surprised that she didn't mention more of her times interacting with the fans - like her appearance at the NightMoves Awards Show, or her co-hosting of the 2010 XRCO Awards Show along with Sean Michaels and Nikki Benz (whom she DID mention in the book as having a Twitter war with Benz), or not mention what I believe was her first real video shoot (a solo glam for Southern Shore) or her first cover shot and first interview - which appeared in Video Xcitement magazine. That said, I was very happily surprised that she held very little, if anything, back when talking about the nitty gritty "secrets" about agencies, the adult biz, health concerns, and related subjects. Lisa is one classy lady who always did say what was on her mind - it reminds my of that famous quote: "Damn the torpedoes; full speed ahead." -DB

Not Just a Porn Star

I first became a fan of Lisa Ann after listening to her appearance on "The Morning After..." podcast (Episode #33 with Damien Fahey - 02/01/11 - it's on iTunes), a program that featured conversations with comedians and porn stars. Many times the porn starlets came off as quite ditzy and vapid, and then there was Lisa Ann; she was articulate, funny, engaging - the perfect girl to hang out with who just happened to also do porn. The episode ran longer than usual as it seemed everyone was having such a good time (she gave a terrific rundown of the kits she would assemble to use once on shoots and then dispose of that showed her true professionalism and intelligence); that was when I made a point of listening to her podcasts and following her on Twitter (@TheRealLisaAnn). While I can't claim that her filmography interests me, I liked hearing what she had to say with her sly sense of humor and unique perspective on life and her career. I leapt at the chance to meet her during a featured dancing engagement at Vanities in September 2014 in Columbus, Ohio, and she couldn't have been sweeter or more approachable. It was one of the few times I'd ever been to a "gentlemen's club," and I made sure to stock up on singles and fives (and a few twenties); somehow I left with no cash (I guess the "make it rain!" rant got the best of me), but boy did I have a great time!

Lisa Ann retired from the porn industry in December 2014 in a handwritten letter that she posted on social media. "It felt so personal to me," she shyly admits. "The idea of sharing my handwriting with the world was a new level of intimacy." For someone who had shared every intimate part of her body for the world to see for over twenty years, sharing her handwriting was what made her nervous? But I get it - it was a transitional time going from a faux intimacy (porn) to sharing something from truly behind the wall of armor she had built to protect herself. Now she has put more pen to paper (so to speak) and written

If it were a movie you'd never believe it, but Lisa Ann lays it all out there with good humor peppered with raunchy (yet not trashy) stories of her unusual life and career in a most entertaining tome.

I admit that I wanted to read Lisa Ann's book for all of the outrageous stories I was sure it would contain, and on this count she doesn't disappoint. From vengeful strippers peeing on the costumes of rivals to playing den mother in a house of unruly porn starlets (they track mud into the house when they are barefoot and drunk, FYI) to negotiating sex acts for a performer with her parents presiding as her managers, Lisa Ann has seen it all even if she hasn't done it all. She doesn't claim to be immune to drugs, but she is very clear at pointing out that she was not and never was a prostitute, outlining the difference very clearly between an adult performer and a paid escort. She confirms that many girls did both, but that was not the path she chose. She never calls herself an actress, which is fair; but she leaves little doubt that she was a true performance artist, enjoying the attention and response from the crowd just like any other performer. She refers to herself and other porn performers as "talent," which again is accurate; it takes talent to be able to perform in such scenes and not get burned out or appear stale on camera. Lisa Ann doesn't glamorize the work so much as lay the truth out there, sharing the "very empty, very lonely void all porn stars feel and can't deny." At the same time she admits to enjoying performing sex acts on camera, only a few times feeling ashamed or regretful over the content of a shoot.

She shares several cautionary tales in which she trusted the wrong people and, at various times, was drugged, attacked, and robbed, but she learned from each experience. "Trust NO ONE, especially the girls," she was advised by a kind bouncer who looked after her after some dancers laced her joint with Angel Dust and she blacked out. "Work, go home, and mind your own business. Save your money and make a plan to get out. The money is addicting and it will change your life - whether it's for the better or the worse is on you." It's one of many close calls she describes, each aiding in their way of developing her character and resilience. She never plays the victim card or wallows in any depression for long; there's too much out there for her to do to allow self pity to come a-knockin'.

"I started to really look at my body as a business," Lisa Ann states, explaining how while still a teenager she made time to exercise, eat well, and maintain a beauty routine, sometimes investing thousands of dollars a month! It isn't cheap or easy to be the living embodiment of fantasy, but, as she concedes, "This is a business investment." While she doesn't mention any cosmetic surgery that she had done specifically for her career, she does relate that one of the first things she wanted to do after retiring was to get her breasts reduced. "I was starting to feel self-conscious about them," she confesses as she assimilated into working for Sirius on the radio. Lisa Ann went from her body being her business in movies and dancing in clubs to using her voice and mind on the radio, where what she looked like didn't matter at all! Her brain was what made her some enemies in porn (she had no problem whistle-blowing on safety regulations being ignored or negotiating for more money or control), and now it was exactly what another industry would value in her.

"Money was the key to my independence," she writes, explaining how much money she could make as a stripper when she started out as merely a high school grad. Her drive to be financially independent and successful propelled her not to rest on her laurels but to keep trying harder within her industry to succeed. "I was constantly fighting for my rights in a business that wanted the girls to believe they had none," she says about being in adult entertainment, but doesn't that statement apply to so many other industries as well? This is where Lisa Ann's story is one that anyone - male or female - can possibly relate: haven't we all been in jobs where we feel undervalued, underutilized, and replaceable? "Porn went from loving and celebrating women to treating them as disposable things," she states, reflecting on the change in the industry from the '90s to today. To me, I see a similar change in other industries as well, one where seniority and relationships no longer matter - everything and everyone is a number. When faced with this, Lisa Ann went forth to cut a new path, venturing into producing and directing her own films and even managing other models for a time. There is a lesson there for all of us, no matter our career.

Her ascent to mega stardom playing the porn parody version of former Alaskan governor Sarah Palin in 2008's Who's Nailin' Paylin? was a perfect example of opportunity meeting up with preparation; Lisa Ann had returned to porn a few years prior as one of the most in demand MILFs around (Google it if you don't know the acronym), and in retrospect it seems like it was all leading up to this one chance that could be a real game changer - and boy was it! Though she was grateful for the opportunity at playing Palin, she's firm that her personal beliefs are the polar opposite. "I would never in a million years support Sarah Palin's politics," Lisa Ann confirms, adding, "Palin's message had no place in the world I lived in - a world of free sex, sexual preference, and a shared desire for marriage equality." Still, demand for feature dancing gigs as Palin in tailored suits skyrocketed, and Lisa Ann picked up the gauntlet and ran with it.

Her popularity brought about mainstream recognition as well as opportunities for more revenue streams, something that made many others in the industry quite jealous. "Porn is like high school with drugs and money - and all the wrong people have both," she candidly states. "Porn is the perfect home for those with addictions and a variety of social issues. It is competitive and spiteful, filled with gossip, haters, and unhappy people. Over the course of my career, I learned that the more people didn't like me, the better I felt."

For a book so comprehensive, it's interesting that Lisa Ann doesn't tell her "coming out" story, the one where she tells her mom and dad about her career in the adult industry. "My parents will never forgive me for doing porn," she clearly states, and other sections describe her estrangement from her dad and her on-again, off-again relationship with her mom; clearly they weren't thrilled with her career of choice, but I was curious to read how she broke the news to them, how they reacted, and how it changed her relationships with them (which were strained anyway). I also wonder if her relationship with her older brother ever improved; there is a cute picture of the two of them from her late teens where it shows that she wasn't the only looker in the family. Sibling relationships fascinate me; I have no relationship with my brothers at all, but I know of other people who are thick as thieves with their brothers and sisters. This is one area in which Lisa Ann is holding some cards close, which is understandable considering that her family didn't sign up for any of this.

You don't need to be into porn to get something out of Lisa Ann's story, though it would help not to be squeamish about some of the more explicit details she is incredibly open about divulging (her sex preparation regimen, opinions on lubricant, "money shot" feelings, etc.). The behind-the-scenes info on what it is like to perform such private things in front of a camera is all there to read (and it's incredibly entertaining and humorous), but there is a deeper story around it about a small town girl from Pennsylvania determined to get out and do big things. They may not be the kinds of things most of us would ever consider doing, but Lisa Ann emerges as someone who is her own best invention, delightfully unrepentant for her porn past while heading into a new career. I don't know that she wrote the book to be so empowering, but that's just what it is.

This story is a tale of all tales. It captivated me with each chapter getting better than the next. The next time her next book (hopefully there's another one lol) I will be reading that as well. Incredible stuff from an unlikely source. Must read, put down, and then read again.

readable literary criticism of Donaldson

Keep in mind, contrary to most of the reviews below, this is NOT a novel by Stephen Donaldson. It's a scholarly book written by a PhD ABOUT Donaldson's Thomas Covenant trilogies. If you're looking for the actual books, don't get this one. As for this book, Variations on the Fantasy Tradition, it's readable, if somewhat over written and in places awkward--a common failing of academic writing. It examines Donaldson's Covenant books (mainly the First Chronicles) in light of general trends and tendencies in fantasy. As such, it's often a compare-contrast operation: this is what a fantasy hero is usually like; this is how Thomas Covenant is similar and different from the standard fantasy hero. It covers in its chapters the hero and how Covenant is something of an inversion of the typical hero; comparisons to Tolkien; myth and how it is used in the Covenant books; the significance/importance of knowledge in the books and how it is gained; the narrative structure; and how life and death are viewed and what meanings they are given in the text. It also does a general coverage of the Second Chronicles. Some "trivia" are gotten wrong or misstated, so that could have been tightened up, though that in itself doesn't affect any of the main points made. The scholarship isn't ground-breaking and it's fairly straightforward, but interesting to me as someone who liked the Covenant books and has taken English courses. The interviews with Donaldson are interesting, though I wouldn't buy it only for them ....If you liked thinking about the themes and ideas in the Covenant books, you may like this, though more of it is devoted to form and structure and than the meanings/reasons behind them (i.e. how Covenant differs from typical heros as opposed to _why_ make him not like other heros). But, then, that's not really why this book was written. It's aim is to locate Donaldson in the literary canon of fantasy. So in that sense, it does all right. Say, three and a half stars.

Excellent review of Donaldson's work

As a fan of Donaldson's Covenant series, I was delighted to see that there was a scholarly work of literary criticism covering the Chronicles. There have been so many written about The Lord of the Rings (deservedly so) but none regarding Covenant. I felt this was a mistake, as Donaldson's works, while certainly not equal to Tolkien's, bear significant literary merit.

One of the things I found most interesting was the shared vocabulary between Senior and Donaldson. Any reader of Donaldson knows that he enjoys employing archaic words. Senior even levies this as somewhat of a criticism. However, *he uses some of the same words*. I couldn't help but chuckle. To argue for clarity, and then go against your own argument is, well, silly.

But that's the worst I can say about the book. Other than works on literary criticism regarding Tolkien, this was one of the very few that I read from cover to cover. He didn't miss many points (although as others have pointed out there were some factual innaccuries; these were minor, though).

False advertisement?

I bought this book over the summer to see if it was a good option for my AP Physics 1 students. It said it was the 2016 version, so I thought it would be updated to reflect how different the test was compared to what people were expecting. All the books for the 2015 test weren't very much like the actual test. I opened this book and began reading and it starts talking about this being the first year of the test, and a few other things that makes it seem like there isn't actually an update to the book. I saw things like that in a few other places as well.

I was wondering if it was just a minor oversight, so I emailed a couple different people to see if it was actually updated for the 2016 test. One person didn't know the answer and I never heard back from the other one. That was the only reason I bought this book, and nobody can even tell me what is going on in the book. I don't know if it is false advertisement or typos that weren't change from last year. Either way, the lack of an answer to my question is rather annoying.

Not the best for self-studying

This book quickly reviews the material with formulas and diagrams, which is nice, but it is by no means a textbook. 5 steps to a 5 is notorious for lacking diagrams, which is a must for physics. I think the book needs more diagrams and that are clearly labeled and described. The format of the chapters seems cramped and at times confusing. They need to add more practice problems with answers an explanations provided! I had such a tough time self-learning with this book because of the lack of explanations to answers. There are a good number of practice problems and supplements, but they have no explanations, which makes them practically useless. This is a good review book, but it's not the best for self learning because of the lack of clear examples, diagrams, and explanations to answers for practice questions. I understand AP Physics 1 is a new curriculum, but a student needs a good book. This one is not the best.

The 5 Steps to a 5 Physics 1 review book was even more helpful than I had hoped for or anticipated. The book was split into each of the units I had covered in class making it easy to follow along in my notes. While not incredibly in depth, the book provided a very helpful overview and details about each equation. The book also included helpful examples for each chapter to apply what you had just learned. I had originally thought the AP test would be similar to in-class tests where you are given a problem and solve it, but the 5 Steps book explained the actual set up of the questions and the form the test would take. It also prepared me to be able to explain all of my answers, not just be able to solve them giving me a deeper understanding of the concepts.

Overall it was a great book and I felt better prepared after having used it to study.

A revelation of mankind's fatal instincts

"Now when I was a little chap I had a passion for maps. I would look for hours at South America, or Africa, or Australia, and lose myself in all the glories of exploration. At that time there were many blank spaces on the earth, and when I saw one that looked particularly inviting on a map (but they all look that) I would put my finger on it and say, 'When I grow up I will go there.' The North Pole was one of these places, I remember. Well, I haven't been there yet, and shall not try now. The glamour's off. Other places were scattered about the hemispheres. I have been in some of them, and... well, we won't talk about that. But there was one yet — the biggest, the most blank, so to speak — that I had a hankering after."

Heart of Darkness is a deep, enigmatic book containing many hidden metaphors. I'm sure I didn't catch half the metaphor illustrations in the text.

The entire book is a dialogue of a story being told. Marlow, an old sailor, is retelling the time of when he steamed through the Congo searching for the mysterious Mr. Kurtz. It might even cause a chill to go down your spine in the sincerely bleak parts.

"I remembered the old doctor—'It would be interesting for science to watch the mental changes of individuals, on the spot.' I felt I was becoming scientifically interesting."

It is a revelation of mankind's fatal instincts. It's about the hidden depths of the mind and the secrets inside mankind's heart.

"The reaches opened before us and closed behind, as if the forest had stepped leisurely across the water to bar the way for our return. We penetrated deeper and deeper into the heart of darkness. It was very quiet there."

hated it at first, Loved it once I read it again

I disliked it at first because it's hard to understand due to the great use of complex language and its complex and out of the ordinary story, however, rereading it really allowed me to see how nice and well written it is and the use of language the author uses to explain his message and theme is very nice. It makes you feel like the narrator is talking directly to you, since it is written by a narrator who is listening to the story of "Marlow", the main character of the book. The messages the author displayed helped me understand more about imperialism and racism. However, we are left with a question on whether or not Marlow is racist or not even at the end of the book.

The process helps me, a middle-aged woman, understand the perils of ageing that I might one day face, and also the struggles that elderly people suffer on a day-to-day basis while stoically attempting to maintain their independence.

Quick & enjoyable

I enjoyed the story of Stevie and her mother, Dot. I can identify, although I thought it would delve more into the reasons behind their lack of saying “I love you.” This seemed to be just a small part of the story, not the focus. Stevie shares memories of growing up, her sometimes difficult relationship with her mother, and Dot’s slow decline. Since this is a true story, some photos would’ve been nice. I did notice the lack of consistency with paragraphs. Some were indented and some were not. I found this distracting. Otherwise, a quick enjoyable read.

Everyone's life has a story, our personalities from the day we are born , how our mom's care for us and how we care for our moms as they age. This author describes her life as a daughter, a mother and a daughter taking care of her aging stubborn mom , a real realistic read!

Mothers and Daughters

Turner's memoir is an insightful story about a mother and daughter relationship that has moved to a new dimension. Throughout the author's life she struggled with her relationship with her mother. Dot was set in her ways and always seemed to be trying to conform Stevie to what she wanted her to be. The angst Stevie felt growing up with Dot is documented through this touching and heartfelt memoir as Dot is now old and being an only child, Stevie has taken on the roll to care for her aging invalid mother.

Dot struggles to maintain her independence, making Stevie's job somewhat more difficult to tend to Dot with her whims and antics, but it seems that the two find a common bond while exchanging stories from the past where Dot can be happy reliving her younger days, and where Turner establishes a common ground with memories they can bond over.

Many stories are shared from Turner's childhood, about living under the eagle eye of Dot. We learn to understand that as much as Dot loved her daughter, she didn't know how to show her love, which became a difficult burden for Turner to give her mother love in return.

As a child, Turner was tired of Dot's OCD ways of life, and as a result, rebelled as many a child will do, with vowing not to be like her mother. Through this story, Dot's anal ways could drive a sane person mad at times. Dot didn't know how to show love and emotion and her methods of thinking she was doing so as a good mother were to nag at and not encourage her daughter for the attributes she possessed, but rather harped on how she thought her daughter should dress, and live her life, driving Turner batty, resulting in her wanting to keep in her own comfort zone, much as a loner.

As a memoirist myself, I know the angst of feeling sorry for an aging mother who never fulfilled me emotionally, and similar to Turner's life, I understand the position she was in, finding it difficult to be able to tell her own mother that she loved her when the words were foreign to her all of her life. It brings a heart-crushing feeling when you can't bring yourself to respond with those words, 'I love you', as I sensed the pathetic non-verbal pleading in my own mother too, wanting to hear me say those difficult words.

I highly recommend this book, not only for the manner in which it was written with entertainment value, but for anyone who has or is struggling with an aging parent, finding it difficult to forgive the past and to learn that there is always a way to make amends.

About the Author
Matt Kloskowski is a writer, instructor, illustrator, and graphic designer based out of Tampa, Florida. As well as being an Adobe Certified Expert, he holds certifications in Macromedia Flash, is a Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer (MCSD), and is an expert in dynamic- and database-driven website development. He is a 1995 graduate of the University of South Florida, with majors in computer information systems and marketing. Matt hosts both an Illustrator (ExtremeIllustrator.com) and Photoshop (ExtremePhotoshop.com) website, where he provides tutorials on all aspects of using the two programs. Matt's tutorials have been used in over 15 schools throughout the United States and have been translated into seven languages. He also writes a weekly column for the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP) and Mac Design magazine's website. In his spare time, Matt enjoys jogging, golfing, playing video games, and spending time with his wife, Diana, and two sons, Ryan and Justin, in their Tampa home.

Laying It On

No photographer can unleash the full power of Photoshop to make an image look like the photographer's vision without understanding the power of layers. (At the very least layers allow the Photoshop user to make selective adjustments to an image, without actually changing the underlying data.) Yet many Photoshop books treat layers in bits and pieces rather than as an integrated whole so that the photographer has a hard time grasping the overall concept. That's where a book aimed solely at layers comes in.

Matt Kloskowski's book deals with all the major applications of layers. The subjects include the nature of layers, blending layers, adjustment layers, layer masks, type and shape layers, enhancing and adjusting photos with layers, layer styles and smart layers. It's all here, but in a short simple quick form. (I'm sure there are more esoteric things to learn about layers; at least one pair of authors has a book on layers that is over 750 pages long!) Most photographers will find that this book has all they need to know about the subject.

The author's text takes the form of tutorials. One can either download files for these tutorials or work with one's own pictures. The tutorials are short, well illustrated and have plenty of white space. If you make a mistake at an early step you won't have to backtrack through twenty or thirty steps to find out where you went wrong. Even if you work out each tutorial, this book will not take more than ten or twenty hours to complete, and it will teach you almost everything you need to know about the subject. Along the way, Kloskowski teaches the reader about other Photoshop tools, as when he integrates a discussion of gradients into a lesson on blend modes, or deals with selections in a tutorial on layer masks.

The author has an easy-going, breezy, humorous style, but those put off by the style of his mentor, Scott Kelby, probably will not be offended here.

Normally, as I go through a book, I make notes in the margin when I discover an error. I'm happy to report that I made no notes in the margin of this book.

For experienced Photoshop users this book will contain nothing new. Perhaps they'll have to look at the 750 page tomes. However, for the photographer who doesn't have a firm grip on the use of layers in Photoshop, this book will help him or her to master the subject.

A terrific jump start to learning layers!

I'll be honest, Photoshop has scared me to death for quite awhile. I love digital photography, but I always felt the whole post-processing end of it was way too complicated and would take me years to learn. A friend of mine would take photos that I had taken and work his PS magic on them, and I would thank him, not really knowing what he did to correct exposure, color, etc. I picked up Photoshop Elements 6, but I still never really understood the whole layers and masks thing, although I loved the editing aspects of it.

But then I saw an episode of PhotoshopUser TV on the web and was introduced to some of the tips, tricks and new features of Photoshop CS5. All of it explained in detail, with some good doses of humor thrown in, by Matt Kloskowski, Scott Kelby and Dave Cross. They made Photoshop less intimidating and much easier to comprehend.

So I got a copy of Photoshop CS5 for myself, determined to learn this program and start using it to its potential. I was all set to purchase the first edition of Matt's Layers book, but he mentioned that he was revising it with new emphasis on CS5, so I decided to wait and get the newest edition.

Matt has a great style of teaching the use of layers in Photoshop. Another reviewer mentioned that Matt wrote in a "juvenile" style, but I found it refreshing and helped make what can be a dry subject interesting. Watching Matt on the web, or attending one of his seminars, will show you that he writes as he speaks. He doesn't talk down to his audience and makes sure you know the subject matter before he moves on. Several times in the book, while demonstrating a process or procedure, he will instruct you to perform a basic step (whether it's a keyboard shortcut or navigating to a certain toolbar) that he talked about in an earlier chapter, that helps to complete the current project. This is just a simple repetition technique that makes those steps come naturally to you.

The book is logically set up to start off a new user with the basics of layers, and quickly moves into blending layers and the use of layer masks to enhance your images. The book is NOT a Photoshop tutorial showing you what every brush or menu option does. Matt assumes you have a good base of knowledge on how to navigate around the program toolbars and menus. He gives you a good foundation of knowledge in the early chapters that he builds upon as you go through the book.

New to this edition is the "Advanced Layer Blending and Compositing" chapter that Matt has added for this edition. Again, while this is about more advanced techniques, Matt makes it easy to understand, and most of all, fun to learn!

In addition to the information in the book, there is a web link given where there are more video tutorials and pictures that you can download, so you can work on them alongside the turorials in the book.

Overall, I would strongly recommend this book for the person just starting out in Photoshop and who wants to understand how layers are the building blocks of all images that are edited in it. As with any book, some of the more advanced users may not get a lot of new information out of it, but there may be a new tip or trick that they might have not have come across before.

A great book for advanced Photoshop idiots like me!

I'm one of those Photoshop users who knows too much to want to read a book mainly for beginners, not because of ego considerations but because I would be bored and skip around. But there are also huge gaps in my haphazard Photoshop education. This book gives absolute beginners what they need without slowing down the more experienced user. It's long enough to cover what it aims out to cover without being so long that you look at it and say, someday I'm going to go through that book but not today.

I was attracted to this book because of who wrote it (I watch Matt's Killer Photoshop and Lightroom tips all the time), the topic, which of course is central to knowing Photoshop, and because of the great cover. I'm a small press publisher and believe me, covers matter. Many good books languish because they don't appeal initially to the eye. And a Photoshop book should have a good design. It's also well-edited, a welcome plus in today's publishing world.

Anyway, what's between the covers is just as delightful. I think the word I would use to best describe this book is methodical but not in a boring way. It's comprehensive, but the way it's laid out never overwhelms you. I know that when I go through this book a couple of times, I'm going to be flipping my way through layers like a maniac but a maniac who knows what she's doing and knows what layers can do for her.

And, I LOVE the last page of each chapter, the "How do I...." question and answers. It gives me one place to go to immediately find all those absolutely essential shortcuts and critical pieces of knowledge without which one wouldn't really be able to say they had a good basic understanding of layers.

Matt even has two companion videos on the book's web site and you can download all the images used in the tutorials there as well.

I may not be an expert in Photoshop (yet) but I do consider myself an expert on Photoshop books and this one is well worth the very reasonable price. Have fun playing with it; I am!

This book addresses these issues. It argues that there are different concepts of discrimination and that different purposes pertaining to different contexts determine which one is the most useful. It gives special attention to a concept of discrimination that ties discrimination to differential treatment of people on the basis of their membership in socially salient groups. Second, it argues that when discrimination is wrong, it is so first and foremost because of its harmful effects. Third, it takes issue with some of the standard devices used to counteract discrimination and submits that combating discrimination requires more than state actions. Finally, it argues that states may sometimes permissibly discriminate.
