About the Author
Fred Brown is a professor in communication ethics at the University of Denver and a principal in the media training and consulting firm Hartman & Brown, LLP. He is a former national president of the Society of Professional Journalists and remains active on their ethics committee. He writes a column on ethics for Quill magazine, a Sunday editorial page for the Denver Post, and conducts analysis for NBC. He lives in Denver, Colorado.

A new angle and a great read

Pacific Eldorado combines a colorful and highly readable history of California with an innovative interpretation of the region and state. Influenced by today's global interconnections, scholars have called for more globally informed and embedded accounts of America's past. Books and courses on the Atlantic World are now being supplemented by research on the Pacific Rim that challenges the dominant east-west narrative of American history. Osborne's textbook focuses this new lens on California, bringing to light new maritime connections and making us see older inland contexts anew. His book is the first text to produce a sweeping backstory for the Pacific shift in America's trade relations and to place California's long history in its wider geographic, demographic, and political settings. It's a great read and a real achievement.

If you want to read what made California great and a leader in the world economy

Pacific Eldorado is a gripping book within the context of living in California and the world at large. The very title is intriguing and Thomas Osborne leaves no doubt about the vibrant and exciting history of California that came about with the global connections of the maritime world. Quite a fascinating and historical viewpoint that I had not hitherto read much about but which defines California, the Golden State. If you want to read what made California great and a leader in the world economy, then this is the book for you. It has a clear and readable quality for a non-scholarly person like me and in every chapter I was easily transported into another place and time. There is nothing laborious or drawn-out about this wonderful narrative. The layout of the book is superb and I particularly liked the shaded introductory overview of each chapter, it immediately set the scene and drew me in. With all its heroism, inequity, exploitation and adventure it is history which we can all identify with, and which ultimately becomes The California Dream for all of us.

I love California history

I love California history, so it was natural for me to pick up Pacific Eldorado and read it. I enjoyed the fact that the author provided profiles of fascinating characters who gave some life to our state's history. For example, profiling Alfred Kroeber and his work with the Yahi, and his efforts with Ishi was very informative. Also, the fact that the author provided such detail on the voyages of the Spanish to California addressed a part of California history that is not well understood by many in our state. I thought his use of timelines for each chapter was helpful to the reader. I would continually refer back to them as I was reading the book. Finally, I thought he address the social history of our state in a balanced manner. California's history with minorities surely is an ongoing process of change and assimilation, and the author does a good job of presenting this. Basically, an excellent history of our state from a different perspective.

A must read for Marvel and comic fans

If you are interested in the Marvel universe or comic publication in general, this is a must read. Entertaining, easy to read, full of amusing comments by Stan Lee and insight into the evolution of the superhero comic world. I remember my grandmother paying me to get rid of all my comics and promise not to read anymore some 55 years ago (that only lasted about a year) and was interested to see that coincided with a public campaign against comics which fortunately was not successful. This is the text version, not the new graphic formatted and more recently updated version recently released.

Good for kids who love their comics. My son was 14 when I bought it and he is in love with Stan Lee. Not too many pages but for th price it I worth it I think. Good quality too actually. It does not look cheap.

ideal starting point in the learning process

This is a good beginner book of mazes. The puzzles are big and simple and allow for a younger child to follow the path easily with a finger or a pen/marker. My child is 4.5 and had no difficulty completing them once I explained it. We are ordering the next step up so I am hoping for a bit more complexity to challenge him.

We started with alphabet workbooks and he was having none of it. It was 'me teaching/him learning' and I met with resistance and lack of interest. This maze book sparked something and I think the idea of 'winning' by reaching the end of the maze (that he completed by himself) was an a-ha moment of his. This in turn led to the successful introduction of other puzzle books and workbooks that eventually led to alphabet/math/writing/etc subjects. He is proud to finish one book and eager to start the next and for that I am very, very pleased.

NOT the first maze book in the Kumon series

Warning: This is NOT the first book of mazes in the Kumon series. I bought this after going through their two tracing books with my 3-year-old and wanted the next step up. I should have looked more closely at the charts provided on the back of the Kumon workbooks because this actually comes progressive AFTER "My Book of Easy Mazes". We will be buying that book next, but because of the progressive nature of all the Kumon material, I wish I had provided the books to my daughter in the correct order.

That said, this is a fun, engaging book of colorful mazes on high quality paper. Difficulty progresses as you move through the book. Every other maze is a colorful scene (e.g. help the airplane fly through the clouds) with the one on the back being a color print, but more monotone and geometrical mazes (traditional mazes if you will). They are equally difficult, but my children (3 & 6) both prefer the more character driven mazes, about which they'll make up stories (i.e. "We have to help the butterfly find her friend.") Although they don't LOOK harder to me, my children will also occasionally complain that the purely geometrical mazes ARE harder.

My 3 year old is halfway through this book and overall really enjoys the mazes. A few of the more recent ones have been more challenging for her and occasionally I have to help her through them, but she keeps trying all the same. For an older 3 year old and certainly 4s and 5s, the first mazes may seem too easy, but they will quickly take on a quality that is very do-able, but still challenging.

We really like this series of books

We really like this series of books, they are great to help your small person work on their fine motor skills and focus while still being fun. We work together with our 2.5YO who really loves these books

The directions are clear and both pictorial and written which means that as your child develops they will be able to be more self sufficient. There is enough in one page to work as a small skill builder without it being boring or a chore for the small person in your life. The topics covered also seem to capture our small persons attention too.

I am delighted with these and when appropriate we will buy from this series again

Can't Stop Loving this Series

I have to give credit to Mr. Collings. He has managed to hook me completely with this series. And yes, I am going to ultimately end up paying the full price of a hardcover book to get to the end of this series. Don't care - it's worth it. It is just a wonderfully fun, funny and inventive zombie/alien series. I actually enjoyed this installment more than some of the previous ones, despite the longer wait for its release. And it was a longer wait. I had to actually go back and reread installment 5 because I forgot some what occurred.

I felt I actually did get some answers in this installment - and some unexpected and nice twists as well. Looking forward to the next installment.

Excellent Fast Paced Zombie-Munching Fun

Michaelbrent Collings did it again!

He created a fast-paced ride through an even faster collapsing world and left me dangling wanting more.

I did feel the story was a bit TOO fast and far too short. There were some things that I think could have slowed down and been developed more, rather than to put out a book to feed the fans who have been waiting. Some things were expected, but there were some twists there that had me hanging on to every word.

Will I buy #7? Yes indeed. Michaelbrent Collings is one of my favorite authors and honestly? Your fans can wait an extra month or two or three to really put some "meat" in the story!

awesome I can't get enough of MBC.

Fast paced. Not predictable. Omg I could not put it down. When does the next book in this series come out? Not your normal zombies here. More like zombies on steroids. The only thing I didn't like was it wasn't long enough. I gave it a five because all I could think about was when was the next time I would have time to finish the book. I made time. Highly recommend for horror, zombie, action lovers.
