Criminological Theory: Past to Present--Essential Readings, Fourth Edition, offers the most comprehensive overview of classic and contemporary theories of crime.

Edited by leading scholars Francis T. Cullen and Robert Agnew, it presents a wide range of readings, including original theory pieces. A brief yet detailed introduction frames each Part (and each reading), providing students with a "road map" as they explore the ongoing intellectual developments, diverse views, and continuing debates in the field of criminological theory.

Building on the success of the third edition, the thoroughly updated and revised fourth edition includes:

* Eight new readings (each with its own introduction)
* Two new Parts (each with its own introduction): "Theories of White-Collar Crime" and "Putting Theory to Work: Guiding Crime Control Policy"

Supplements

* For adopting instructors: A new Instructor's Manual on CD, featuring a Test Bank with multiple-choice and essay questions, learning objectives, key words, discussion topics and exercises, and PowerPoint lecture slides

Comprehensive enough for graduate students yet accessible enough for undergraduate students, Criminological Theory: Past to Present--Essential Readings, Fourth Edition, remains a solid introduction to the foundations of criminology--and to the competing theories that will shape thinking about crime in the years ahead.

It's Alright. Nothing Special.
By Baze
It's an alright book. The dull text could be a lot more lively, especially for a subject like criminology. This introductory book breaks its essays down in an organized fashion, and does cover a wide array of topics. It refers to studies done by sociologists and other social scientists; however, actual studies are not presented for the reader to evaluate methodologically. This edition's updates includes an analysis on white collar crime, a phenomenon relevant to our politics and economy today.

The book is just a collection of essays that introduce the reader to certain theories and ideas in criminology, which could be of great use to a student beginning his or her study in criminology.

It's a great book for a high school or college course. If your teacher lists this book on the class reading list, you'll find it worthwhile to read through it. However, if it is not required for class, you are better off finding some other text to read.

Hope this helps!

By D'Ed Wood
This is an excellent reader for introductory criminology theory courses at the upper division or graduate level. It contains excerpts from the original theorists, rather than a textbook author's summation. The book allows you to engage with the original thinker in his or her own words. It's a collection of excerpts from scholarly works, none of which are written to be entertaining. Ergo the "boring" comments in other reviews, which are typical of low-motivation undergraduates and should be disregarded. If you want an intro to crim theory from the primary sources without having to build your own library full of books and journal articles, this reader is an excellent collection of the main stuff you need.

Essentially a good read
By Josh Bittinger
For a criminology reader, this is a good choice. The book progresses in a fairly logical sequence and contains many of the essential readings for various theories. The authors also provide great introductions to each section to prepare the reader and familiarize him/her with the theories and papers they are about to read. Great for Criminology students or people who want to learn more about theory.
