A Must-Read for Those Interested in Retiring Baby Boomers

Judy Schreiner and Mike Kephart have written a wonderful book here that should be on the shelves for developers, urban geographers, planners, architects, and any others seeking to understand the 80+ million or so people known collectively as the Baby Boomers. There are a few big questions -- which are really moving targets -- that form the underlying theme of this book: what are baby boomers going to do as they age, where will they live, and what type of housing and communities will they choose as they make these decisions? A key message from this book is that there is no single answer, as there is no simple formula for this incredibly diverse demographic group.
The book in many ways reads as a textbook, or a how-to guide, but it is based on real-world examples and fact-based data. Certainly, our economy and society have changed even since the recent publication date of this book, but I cannot imagine anyone with a building, planning, development or even simply a socio-demographic interest in what is the single largest "group" of our society not learning something substantive from this rich text. What we know is that the Baby Boomers have demonstrated a history of change and unpredictability, and the authors emphasize that this theme is going to continue as these folks age into their 60s and beyond. Building communities, and housing, to meet these changes will evolve in many forms -- from the spacing of housing units to the interior design of the kitchen spaces.
Some may feel as if the case examples at times are a bit focused in particular geographic areas (those in the inter-mountain west will feel quite at home here...) or on planned housing communities. But, the authors bring their personal experience to provide a proper mix of project-specific depth with broad themes based in well-documented research. As an undergraduate and graduate faculty member in urban planning and real estate, I would not hesitate to include this as part of my syllabus. As a practitioner serving this important market, this book has already become a well-used reference in my office library.

Engaging. Informative. Comprehensive.

As a long-time practicing architect, I recommend Building for Boomers to architects, designers, planners, developers, bankers, contractors, and suppliers who want to know how to approach this huge market. Even homeowners would gain in terms of understanding housing options. Boomers are considering the next phase of life - and want downsizing, freedom, amenities, and simplicity. It's a timely approach to these questions.
The range of topics and knowledge is spot-on what you need to know. They (a writer/editor and an architect) open with statistics on who Boomers are and what they want, define types of development and floor plan layouts, address special topics like aging in place, sustainability, and New Urbanism, and conclude with niche market development and how to talk to Boomers. It's truly a comprehensive reference guide. Plus they supply insider's tips to save people from mistakes. The writing style flows smoothly, making the immense amount of material accessible, engaging reading. Some of the plans and cost figures may be region specific; they note to check local conditions
For people who want to know about the Boomer market during the next couple of decades, Schriener and Kephart have provided a leg up, an excellent starting point. Well done!

Clarity

Out of the noise created by the constant drum beat in the media of "Boomer-this and Boomer-that" comes this gem that provides clarity to one of the most emotional of all things... the place you live. Written in an entertaining but educational manner, this book is easy to read and gets to the point of helping the reader bridge the gap of understanding the Boomer generation... not just from a professional viewpoint of how and what to design... but also from the homeowner's veiwpoint of balancing wants and needs. Bravo!
