Dr. Vladimir Kvint has been a professor of strategy, management systems and international economics at Fordham University, New York University’s Stern School of Business, American and LaSalle Universities, and Babson College and serves as chair of the Financial Strategy Department in the Moscow School of Economics at Moscow State University, Russia. He is a member of the Bretton Woods Committee�and the Russian Academy of Sciences, a US Fulbright Scholar, and a well-established strategic advisor.

Having no background in Economics, it's the vision part of Strategy (predictions based in fact) that had me speculating about a kinship to a novel--an alternative reality also created from a set of facts. Yet Strategy is a science with laws, not an art form. Dr. Vladimir Kvint explained,"The main law of Strategy is the Economizing of Time. If you are late, you lose a certain amount of resources. But you can be first in the niche of opportunities." Intriguing. I wondered what a strategist actually does."What a strategist does is assemble informative resources that already exist into a statistical baseline. Assembling resources and developing strategy takes time. By the time a Strategy is ready for implementation, what was current is already past. For strategists current does not exist. You have to understand the future for it to work. " In this book, thorough and authoritative, I became fascinated by a science, called by Napoleon, "more powerful than any weapon." Dr. Kvint was able to show how visions could be made real and move through time, even transform the world. Dr. Kvint builds a crystal-clear theoretical foundation of strategy that is universal in its structure and can be applied to any “strategizing object” as long as the object is defined. To my knowledge, it is the most comprehensive coverage of theory and history of strategy as well as practical aspects of strategy in future and global context.
This book is intellectually very stimulating and inspiring. There is neither a fast path to nor a quick fix for strategy. Reactive pivots or quick fixes cannot be part of strategy, unless they are foreseen, and hence, well prepared. As the main variable in strategy is time, it takes time to build a time enduring strategy. The reason Kvint gives in his book: “…by its very nature, it (strategy) is multidisciplinary, by its influence, it is multidimensional, and by its structure, it is hierarchical.”
A prospective strategist, who is searching for practical aspects of strategy formulation, will find well-written guidelines in part II: “Strategy in Practice”.
The substantial and carefully compiled bibliography for further reading on the topic of strategy ranges from ancient times to present and is incredibly valuable for anyone interested in developing a strategic mindset.
